City of Frankenmuth Department of Public Works Goes Digital!
August 2006 -- City of Frankenmuth DPW and the City of Saginaw GIS staff recently kicked off a GPS data collection project for the inventory of the City and Township water utility distribution system. Frankenmuth DPW staff are field verifying and Collecting water utility valves, curb stops and hydrants using a Trimble ProXR GPS System to gather the coordinates and associated attributes for integration into their GIS system. Once the inventory is complete the City of Saginaw staff will integrate existing CAD (Computer Aided Design) water main line work to fit the new higher accuracy infrastructure.
Frankenmuth City and Township are the first SAGA members outside the City of Saginaw to move towards a GIS inventory based utility layer. All SAGA members are provided with high accuracy base layers including Aerial photography, parcels, centerlines, zoning, future land use and more. With the addition of the utility data, the GIS system expands to subsurface infrastructure mapping, which will provide the DPW staff, City and Township planners, and officials with instant utility location and attribute information. This information can be used for managing flow of water that service homes and businesses, track location and condition of the features and help future development and planning projects. The GIS layers are able to integrate multiple database and asset management systems into one manageable system. For more information on this project please contact the City of Saginaw GIS Division at 989-759-1414.
